WHO AM I?

Hi, my name is Patricia Mixon, a recent psychology college graduate, who has always been able to make good friends with a pencil and paper (poet), thus I decided to start this poetry blog. Some of my poems will be personal and I felt that it would only be just that I provide my readers with insight of who I am, especially my journey with poetry. Here is my story:

I started writing as early as eight years old. My first memory of being a writer was when I used to write down all my thoughts at night and used all of the paper that my mom brought me to use for my classes. I cannot express how many times my teachers called my mom to inform her that I had no paper to write on at school ("embarrassing"). It felt like a secret that I had to keep to myself that I knew how to write good stuff (at least in my opinion). Writing always gave me a sense of relief. A sense of freedom that me and the page were sharing my secrets without judgement.

COMING OUT OF MY SHELL
Fast forward to high school, my senior year is when I came out of my shell and begin performing my poems in front of people. My English teacher had an assignment that involved memorizing in entire poem and reciting it. I made this a quick assignment by finding the shortest poem possible without realizing that I was going to fall in love with writing my very own poems and performing.

Honestly, my senior year of high school is where my journey with poetry became serious to me. As I recall, I quit Track and Field that year, and I felt really down about no longer doing that sport ( I was somewhat good at it - not the best, but not the worse). I truly believe that quitting Track and Field was the best decision that I ever made because I was able to nurture my gift (writing poems).
Looking back, my former English teacher changed my life because she was the first one to encourage me to perform and to keep writing. Even in college, English teachers were my favorite people, leaving me with tons of quotes and advice.
ADVICE THAT HAS STAYED WITH ME
In middle school, my English teacher made the class write in journals about their weekend. I remember his reasoning was what good is a memory if you cannot go back and revisit in some shape or form. Also, one of the best pieces of advices that I have received from a college English teacher is to write it all out (hence the name of my blog) and edit it later. In simple terms, do not worry about the mistakes as you go just keep writing, you can fix them later.

WHAT ARE MY PLANS WITH THIS POETRY BLOG?
Poetry has always been a part of my life and this blog is a place where I can express myself freely. Like many people, I constantly doubt myself and wonder where I am going in life or my calling. But poetry is the one thing that I am certain is my gift.
The truth is I want to leave my mark on this earth with my poetry. As I always say: There is nothing worse than wasted talent.
Lastly, I want to thank everyone who decides to read my poems for giving my art a chance!
